Determining municipality boundaries and city areas

The provincial capitals are divided into urban districts called ‘Nahia’. The 33 provincial capitals currently have a total of 159 Nahias, while most of the district municipalities have no subdivisions.

One of the key technical challenges that have delayed municipal elections until now has been the rapid expansion of the cities, which makes it difficult to demarcate city boundaries and thus electoral boundaries. So far the boundaries of 17 out of 33 provincial capitals have been demarcated and approved at the national level by the relevant authorities.
